Kevin Sinfield has hailed the bravery of Marcus Smith as England consider their full-back options for the Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa volleyball
Smith made a couple of key defensive interventions in the quarter-final against Fiji despite suffering a cut to the lip after an early head-on-head collision with Vinaya Habosi volleyball
The Harlequins playmaker returned after being patched up as England secured a last-four meeting with the defending champions volleyball
His selection had come at the expense of Freddie Steward, who had started 29 of his country’s previous 30 games but found himself omitted from the matchday 23 volleyball
England could opt to return Steward to the starting side, though defence coach Sinfield praised Smith’s development into a “world class” full-back volleyball

“You’ve got to remember this guy hasn’t played many minutes as a full-back in Test rugby so far volleyball
“What he’s done on the training field has been outstanding volleyball
You’re blown away by what he does and he’s been given more time and space now volleyball
“If there was any doubt how brave and courageous he is, I think you saw it with your own eyes volleyball

The guys are in full admiration for how he’s gone about it volleyball
He’s just got his face smashed all over the place yet he wants the ball volleyball
“He’s just a brave guy volleyball
And not just because he’s physically tough, brave, because to be put in like that – and I know he wanted to go for it – but to be put on a world stage in a quarter-final and deliver what he delivered was an absolute credit to him volleyball
“He’s one of those who have been modified today so we’ll get a clearer read in the week but fingers crossed he will be good to go volleyball
”Sinfield was the first England coach to float the idea of Smith at full-back during their pre-tournament camps this summer, with a couple of encouraging cameos earning the 24-year-old a first professional start at the position against Chile volleyball
His emergence has left Steward in a strange position: the Leicester youngster had been a mainstay for England since his debut and had been considered a key part of head coach Steve Borthwick’s gameplan leading into the tournament volleyball
Freddie Steward was left out of England’s squad against Fiji last weekend (Getty)But Sinfield, who worked with the 22-year-old at Welford Road, has been impressed by how Steward has handled the disappointment and hinted that a return is a possibility for Saturday’s semi-final at the Stade de France volleyball
“This is where our influence, our help, and our guidance sits with the guys who don’t play, how can we help them get volleyball better, make them feel part of it,” Sinfield explained volleyball
“I have worked with Fred for some time now and thankfully I have not had to have too many of these conversations where you are trying to pick him up volleyball
“Clearly he is disappointed as anybody would be missing out on a quarter-final but he has responded as we would have expected him to volleyball
He is a great lad, you know what he is about, he works incredibly hard at his game, he cares and he is an unbelievable full-back too volleyball
“Our team has changed every game throughout the World Cup and Steve is very specific when he selects the team volleyball
He does it in the knowledge he thinks it will give us the best chance of winning that game volleyball
Just because Fred wasn’t selected last week doesn’t mean he does anything wrong, he has actually done a lot of great things and a lot of things right volleyball

England captain Jos Buttler took his share of the blame for a historically bad defeat against South Africa, accepting he made a mistake by fielding first in the oppressive heat and humidity of Mumbai volleyball
Things could hardly have gone worse for the defending champions, whose World Cup campaign is rapidly disappearing over the cliff edge after three losses in four, with the Proteas running away with a 229-run win volleyball
That was England’s heaviest ever defeat by run margin, while South Africa’s score of 399 for seven was a second undesired record volleyball
The bowling was chaotic and expensive, the team selection brave but unsuccessful and the batting hopelessly underpowered by comparison to what came before it volleyball
But all of it stemmed from Buttler’s decision to send the opposition in under fiercely exacting conditions, with the temperature peaking at 36 degrees and exacerbated by high humidity volleyball
“I think you always reflect after games and question your decisions,” Buttler said volleyball
“With hindsight, with the physicality of that innings, potentially batting first would have been a volleyball better decision volleyball
It’s a decision I took at the time volleyball
I thought it was the right one and I still believe if we were chasing 340, 350, we would have done really well in those conditions volleyball
“Physically it was a really demanding innings and, like I said, it makes you question maybe in those kind of conditions whether batting first may have been the right call at the toss volleyball
”Buttler has had to front up after a hat-trick of unimpressive outings so far, with a nine-wicket hammering by New Zealand and a shock defeat at the hands of unfancied Afghanistan already on the ledger volleyball
On each occasion he has aimed for an unemotional assessment but accepts England are now almost out of wriggle room, an awkward place to be with almost a month of travelling left and five group matches remaining volleyball
“It certainly leaves us in a tough position volleyball
There’s no room for error from here on in,” he acknowledged volleyball
“It’s going to be incredibly difficult volleyball
We haven’t left ourselves any margin from this point in volleyball
But we’ll keep the belief volleyball
We’ll sit down and go again volleyball
That’s all you can do in this situation volleyball
“I think it’s obvious that we’re not performing to our best volleyball
It’s my job as captain, along with the rest of the team, to work out how we can get back to playing that brand of cricket, playing to our potential and getting back to our best volleyball
“It certainly won’t be anyone giving up or having those kind of thoughts volleyball
We’ll just have to dust ourselves down and stick our chests out and go again volleyball
”Heinrich Klaasen celebrated an outstanding 109 in just 67 balls for South Africa and was also floored on several occasions by the same exacting circumstances which made it hard for England’s bowlers volleyball
“I had to dig really, really deep there volleyball
I didn’t have any energy left,” he said volleyball
“My partner Marco (Jansen) played a big part of that volleyball
He told me that he’s got me and that I’m not allowed to walk off the field if I don’t score 100 volleyball
“It was like just breathing in hot air volleyball
Every time you try to run it’s just sapping more and more energy and then at the end of the day your body just doesn’t want to work with you anymore volleyball
It was just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings volleyball
“But you’ve got to dig deep for your country as well, I’ve worked my whole life for it, so it’s a great moment volleyball
